Koobface Worm

In your social networking sites, have you experienced getting comments, messages, notifications from your friends telling you to view a site but you end up getting nothing when you click on it? Once a user clicks on the link (or at times, pictures), it will go to a site which installs a virus into the user's computer. Once installed, it will send out links via the user's social network account (Facebook, Myspace, Friendster, etc.) without the user's knowledge. This is a scam that is taking over social networks nowadays since they have no control whatsoever over it. So how do you safeguard your account from this malicious worm?

1. Do not accept invitations/messages/comments automatically. Try to filter out the legitimate ones.
2. Be on the lookout on suspicious links in messages. Some messages may contain pictures of a girl stripteasing on a webcam or sometimes a chipmunk toon clip.
3. Warn other users, friends, etc. and notify system administrators.
4. Update your antivirus definition files.

Arm yourself with knowledge.

VIPeers Beta Invites

If you are uploading and sharing stuff on the internet (legally and illegally speaking), do you use:

1. one-click hosts for direct download?
2. old style peer-to-peer technology?
3. torrents?
4. all of the above?

If you answered 'YES' on any one of the questions above, then you must try VIPeers! Though it is only in beta and the system is invite only, you can go over to THIS PAGE about it and you *might* receive and early holiday gift from them.

Taken from VIPeer's 'About' page:

VIPeers® is a new file sharing Web-site where people can upload files and share them on the Web very easily.

VIPeers can handle any type of file such as video, music, photos and it is the best choice for sharing high definition content as it does not have any size limitation.

VIPeers helps you share your content with your friends, family or co-workers in a couple of mouse-clicks. It is in fact the first service of its kind to offer Direct Download Links as well as assisted BitTorrent distribution.

"VIPeers" is also the new brand of our file sharing network which emerged 2 years ago as "Podmailing". Now that we offer many more sharing options than email, the Podmailing brand was holding us back. But don't worry, the Podmailing® service and software is still supported and continues to evolve as part of the wider VIPeers offer.

No TV? No problem.

With today's technology, it is easy for those who own a computer to watch TV shows and movies online. Web 2.0 paving the way for easy access to streaming media resources which quite frankly, has free tv shaking on its knees. You can either choose to use a program to watch online shows or just settle for your browser. Both of which will definitely consume your bandwidth significantly. There are of course legal concerns that may entail watching copyrighted stuff off the net so just be on the look out what sites and software are legitimate and what are those that are not. If you're not into streaming movies, you can always revert to downloading. Peer-to-peer technology has evolved from your basic Limewire, Kazaa, eMule and the likes into Torrents. Here are some streaming sites that I've found through googling:

Caio.co.uk: Get paid reviewing products

I came across this site when I was looking for an online review for the iPod classic I was itching to buy a few months ago. I wasn't aware then that this site offered to pay you if you review a product based on your own experience. The thing is, you will only receive payment if another user thought your review was helpful. At times, you will end up with negative comments if your review was poorly written. Here are excerpts from their FAQs:
  1. How can I earn money by writing product reviews?
Reviews of some products will be awarded a small cash payment every time a member rates them "helpful", "very helpful" or "exceptional". To take advantage of this, write high-quality reviews about these products to ensure that you receive numerous positive ratings by other members.

  2. How are earnings for member ratings calculated?
Your earnings for ratings of your reviews by other members are calculated by multiplying the number of ratings per review by the remuneration rate for each of the reviews written. These totals are then added up and your overall earnings calculated once a month. In case of half pennies, the total is rounded up in members’ favour.

  3. Do I earn more for writing the first review about a product?
Yes. If you are the first member to review a product in a pay-per-rating category, you will be paid twice as much for the positive ratings your review receives as the rate indicated by the pound signs next to the product name. You will receive double the rate for the first month after you publish the review only. Thereafter, ratings will be remunerated at the usual rate.
The minimum cashout is £5 which is processed one month after the request. Btw, You will need a UK bank account for you to cashout. You can view my first review: Motorola V3 - a user review and you can signup at Ciao: Get paid to review products and websites.

Upload to multiple sites at once

Uploading to one host is already a chore. What more if you need to upload a file to multiple sites? Here's a scenario: you want to share a file to your friend from another country and uploaded it to Rapidshare. It took you 30 minutes to upload the file. So you send him the download link only to find out that Rapidshare cannot be accessed from where he is. Bummer. You upload the file again onto another host and waste another 30 minutes to get it hosted - but then your connection to the upload server timed out. Sucks doesn't it? Luckily, there are sites that offer mirror uploading.

So what is mirror uploading? It is basically a service that let's you upload your file to their server and let their server do the uploading to other one-click hosters. It's that easy. I've gathered a list of mirror uploaders that I've come across over the past months.

Available mirrors: Badongo, Depositfiles, Easy-share, FileFactory, Megaupload, Rapidshare, Sharedzilla, Uploaded.to, Zshare
Max mirrors to upload to: 4 mirrors

Almost all of these sites have a 100mb file size limit. Also, you have to follow the ToS of the mirrors you are to use. For more info, just view the site's FAQ.

Internet threats for the utterly confused

We are faced with different kinds of threats when we use a computer. Sadly, not all of us know what a threat is, how it works moreso how to combat them. Yes you can Google them up but how can we look up information on things we can't identify in the first place? With the help of Wikipedia, I've gathered some information about common computer threats to understand them better.

Virus

A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer without permission or knowledge of the user. The term "virus" is also commonly used, albeit erroneously, to refer to many different types of malware and adware programs. The original virus may modify the copies, or the copies may modify themselves, as occurs in a metamorphic virus.

Trojan

In the context of computing and software, a Trojan horse, also known as a trojan, is malware that appears to perform a desirable function but in fact performs undisclosed malicious functions. Therefore, a computer worm or virus may be a Trojan horse. The term is derived from the classical story of the Trojan Horse.

Worm

A computer worm is a self-replicating computer program. It uses a network to send copies of itself to other nodes (computer terminals on the network) and it may do so without any user intervention. Unlike a virus, it does not need to attach itself to an existing program. Worms almost always cause harm to the network, if only by consuming bandwidth, whereas viruses almost always corrupt or modify files on a targeted computer.

Spyware

Spyware is computer software that is installed surreptitiously on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user's interaction with the computer, without the user's informed consent.

While the term spyware suggests software that secretly monitors the user's behavior, the functions of spyware extend well beyond simple monitoring. Spyware programs can collect various types of personal information, such as Internet surfing habit, sites that have been visited, but can also interfere with user control of the computer in other ways, such as installing additional software, redirecting Web browser activity, accessing websites blindly that will cause more harmful viruses, or diverting advertising revenue to a third party. Spyware can even change computer settings, resulting in slow connection speeds, different home pages, and loss of Internet or other programs. In an attempt to increase the understanding of spyware, a more formal classification of its included software types is captured under the term privacy-invasive software.

Test your connection speed (really)

I've been using Speedtest since I got my DSL and I'm quite satisfied with their service. Until a few weeks back, I saw a recommendation from a site I frequent about this connection speed test service that checks your connection real-time plus some extras. So I was interested and since then, I've been using their service. What site? Speed.io Internet DSL Speedtest. I tested my connection this morning and here's how my supposed to be 512kbits subscrition faired:

speed.io - Der DSL Speedtest

So if you're not that satisfied with what other connection testers are giving you, I recommend you try Speed.io.

Bypass RapidShare & MegaUpload Limits

This is just an update for all the links you can find on the net for bypassing the download limits of these two popular one-click hosters. I don't even know why these are popular since they have the suckiest limitations you can ever think of (for free users of course).

Still on the setting-up phase. Scouring the web for linkbacks etc. If you are interested, this blog is open for link exchange. Just post a comment here and I'll contact you as soon as possible. Let's build our networks better!

Hello World!

First post. Just a background of sorts. This is my second blogging project which aims to use different earning schemes found on the internet. Pay-per-click, pay-per-post, advertisements and the likes will be reviewed every once in a while to validate their claims. Check this space out regularly for reviews, general rants and raves about anything and everything coming from a half-baked tech guy.
